Pachyphytum is a small genus of succulents that belong to the Crassulaceae family. They are native to Mexico at elevations from 600 to 1,500 metres (2,000 to 4,900 ft). The name pachyphytum is derived from the ancient Greek work pachys (meaning thick) and phyton (meaning plant).
The leaves of Pachyphytum are plump and fleshy. The color ranges from orange to green to purple.
Pachyphytum can tolerate high heat and intense sunlight. They can thrive in full or partial sunlight. Pachyphytum do not tolerate frosts well though. Temperatures below 20° F will kill the plant, and temperatures which may go below 45° (fahrenheit) during extended period should be avoided.
As with most Crassulaceae, pachyphytum can tolerate and even appreciate poor soil conditions, so long as it is well drained.
